As events are unfolding, the situation is often complex, grey and confusing, but after a while, when the dust settles and the fear recedes, a sanitised and simplified narrative of right and wrong tends to take over as the public perception, and becomes 'history'.

The good news is that with the exception of the most ideologically committed actors in any fight, it is generally possible for most to pretend (and convince themselves) they actually always were on the right side of history.
