New Threads Volunteers
We are a group of volunteers who have been following the case of the Xiao Procedure for many years. Several months ago, we published an open letter regarding the procedure based on the investigations of Chinese reporters and lawyers, as well as of our own.

We would like to point out that Beaumont Hospital's one-year results were recently published in the Journal of Urology. Serious questions have been raised in the Editoral Comments on the results, such as the inconsistency between Beaumont's results and Xiao's own, the discrepancy between urodynamic data and subjective voiding, the statistical insignificance of the improvement, the speculation that the improvement might be the result of unilateral denervation or intra-abdominal pressure generation, as well as the risk of the procedure.

You're Dr. Xiao's close friend, so that it is understandable that you told a distorted one-sided story and even some lies regarding the disputes between Xiao and Dr. Fang. Among those lies, we would like to especially expose this one:

"Dr. Xiao’s revolutionary surgical procedure can be successfully reproduced all over the world"

The truth is that the procedure could not be reproduced outside of China.

0. Dr. Xiao claimed he has performed thousands of patients in China, with more than 85% success rate in both spinal cord injury and spina bifida patients.

1. According Dr. Xiao's presentation at the SIU 2009, among 6 patients with spinal cord injury in Germany, "only 2 showed some improvement".

2. According to the media, "the three with spinal cord injuries were not helped by the procedure" at Beaumont Hospital in Michigan.

3. According to Beaumont's report published in the Journal of Urology, among 9 patients with spina bifida, "no patient achieved complete urinary continence".

4. The editorial comments seriously questioned Beaumont's report, here we cite a few:
"the results of the study by Peters et al are the first to challenge the excellent, previously published results of nerve rerouting that showed up to 85% success"
"the clinical benefit of the procedure is not at all similar to previous (Dr. Xiao's) reports"
"The fact ... is troubling in light of the report of 87% success with 110 children with spina bifida presented by Xiao"
"Xiao reported that more than 87% of 110 patients gained sensation and continence within 1 year. In comparison, the current patients undergoing the identical procedure with the help of Xiao himself only showed a modest improvement"
"Unless the innovators provide a sound argument and data for the validity of the procedure, there is a great danger of its improper and rapid adaptation by patients and the medical community at large"
