Naturally, white kids learned about black musics from white singers originally. What I had in mind was really Bill Haley and His Comets' 1954 hit "Rock Around the Clock". They got popular at least a year before Chuck Berry and Elvis. This following passage is from the rock and roll hall of fame:

In effect, “Rock Around the Clock” became an anthem for rebellious Fifties youth.
