During takeoff and landing, all electronics devices need to be off. During cruising, you can watch video w/ laptop, dvd player, smart phone @ flight mode. If you turn on electronic device during takeoff or landing,(from the article, this incident happened during takeoff) the airline of course can throw you out. A rule is a rule unless someone changes it. Airline reserves the right to serve and not serve. :)
