Comments on the two articles about "Vice President" The two articles on xys.org on "Vice president" with financial institutions, one by a group of anonymous people from Wall Street, followed by the other by Bing Liu, a branch manager of Bank of New York, are erroneous. While it is true that many "Vice Presidents" in the bank are people without management responsibilities, it is also true that many people with management responsibilities do not even have the "Vice president" title. (I've seen branch managers with a title of "Assistant Vice President") Nevertheless, there are "Vice Presidents" who have huge management responsibilities of both people and resources. I've worked with a"Vice President" who ran a derivative desk with annual P/L in tens of millions of dollar, and traded billions of dollars on behalf of the bank. The wacky claim by authors of both articles that all "Vice President" are without authority or management responsibilities is too much an exaggeration. And for the benefit of people who care too much about titles, there are places (not a branch for sure) in a bank where people use this phrase a lot: You can call me janitor as long as you pay me. It would be more helpful to readers for the authors to explain corporate title structures of banks, and give some statistics (for example, for the two big banks I worked for, about 5% employees have the "Vice President" title) than making general claims about a big group of people. As for those young people who use their "Vice President" titles in China, I see nothing wrong. If anyone envies them, please follow their steps. At a theoretic level, please also think more thoroughly about how banks and markets work. I do not understand what the authors of the two articles were trying to "prevent" those "Vice Presidents" from doing in China. To me, there are no other group of people who are better qualified than those "Vice Presidents" to help China's financial institutions in current environment. It is also an underestimate of the knowledge and intelligence of people in charge of Chinese banks to think that they would give someone big responsibilities just because of a "Vice President" title.
