I was extremely startled to receive your email. I had 
not known what Dr. Xu was claiming on his Website, and 
thank you for drawing it to my attention.

I am on the road traveling and will not have the time to 
respond in detail for a few days. But in brief the 
answers to your questions are: yes, I did speak with 
him; no, I did not express approval of his work. I 
should note, furthermore, that I am a correspondent in 
the news division of Science, not a member of the 
scientific staff (as I made clear to Dr Xu, and to all 
the other researchers with whom I spoke). Thus even if I 
had expressed approval of his research -- which, to 
repeat, I did not -- it would not be equivalent to 
having his work accepted by Science's scientific staff. 
For that to occur, he would need to submit his work to 
Science for publication, and have it go through the 
normal editorial process.
