i have discussed the matter with one of my colleagues and can now 
confirm the following facts you mention in your letter: we were going 
to publish si's correspondence and a rebuttal by wei. i can also 
confirm that si requested nm to delay publication, that the editors 
could not honor such a request, and that we ultimately withdrew our 
offer to publish the correspondence.

what i cannot confirm is that he was under pressure to withdraw the 
correspondence. this may or may not have been the case; i simply don't 
know.

last, i'd like to say that it is not our policy to discuss with third 
parties the basis for our editorial decisions. i can therefore make no 
additional comments on the reasons why we decided to withdraw our 
offer to publish the letter after si requested the delay in publication.
