                   　　关于“科学完整性”

　　关于“科学完整性”（Integrity of science），有网友建议造一个新词，
写成“科学完正性”，以避免误解。中国文化中没有integrity的观念（很多中
国人无法理解科学事业居然还要追求不破坏其“完整性”），造新词也是一个选
择，只要不被当成是错别字。比如有文人故弄玄虚把context这个常用词在指文
化背景时翻译成“与境”，我总觉得是“语境”的错别字。

　　在道德层面上，integrity往往被译为“正直”、“诚信”，其实也不是很
妥当。integrity更强调的是对目的、责任、准则、规范、价值的道德坚持。

　　既然谈到了“科学完整性”，干脆翻译一段255名院士公开信的起草人Peter 
Gleick院士2007年在国会听证会上的证词《对科学完整性的威胁》（Threats to 
the Integrity of Science）中对联邦政府破坏科学完整性的控诉：

　　在过去的几年，已有越来越多的迹象表明，在联邦政府层面上，存在着用各
种各样的战略和战术对科学过程的完整性所作的系统性挑战和威胁。独立的政府
审核机构和顾问委员会被解散。获取数据和信息的途径减少了。联邦政府的科学
家遭禁口。科学声望，而不是科学证据，受到质疑。由联邦政府机构或政府之外
的人士准备的科学分析和结论，因政治或意识形态的原因被没有做过科研的人加
以改变。党派机构的工作已取代了超党派科学家的工作。

　　For the last several years, there have been growing indications of 
systematic challenges and threats at the federal level to the 
integrity of the scientific process using a variety of strategies and 
tactics. Independent government review organizations and advisory 
boards have been disbanded. Access to data and information has been 
reduced. Federal scientists have been muzzled. Scientific reputations, 
rather than scientific evidence itself, have been questioned. 
Scientific analyses and conclusions, prepared within federal agencies 
or by people outside of government, have been changed for political 
and ideological reasons by people who have not done the scientific work. 
Work by partisan organizations has been substituted for work by 
non-partisan scientists.
